How to Know if You Need a Website Refresh or a Full Website Redesign

You’ve got that itch again: the one that’s telling you it’s time to rethink your website strategy.

Maybe it was commentary from visitors that put the bug in your ear (“your checkout page is broken!”) or your lack of enthusiasm to send new clients and customers to your website at all… or maybe it’s just been long enough since you’ve had the same old website and are in desperate need of an update.

Whatever the reason for prompting your website designer search, you know something has to change — but to what extent? Do you really need to start from scratch and build from the ground up this time?

Well, maybe that is necessary… or maybe not.

Below, I’m sharing two questions you need to ask yourself to know if your business needs a full website redesign or if a simple website refresh will do.

1. How much of my business has evolved from where the website is currently to what I offer and who I serve now?

A simple brand update is easy enough to pull through in website refresh, such as my 5-Day Website Refresh. The same can be said for an expansion or slight pivot of your offers. But if the structure of your business changes or your ideal audience shifts in a major way, you might want to consider a full redesign, like I offer through my Signature Website Design package.

When your business structure changes (and your audience), this can directly affect the content structure of your website and change the copywriting completely. These are not necessarily minor copy or color updates that can be accomplished with a simple website refresh, so a full redesign might be the better path in that case.

2. Is my existing website sending me regular inquiries and converting visitors into sales?

A lack of solid inquiries and sales through your website can stem from a number of reasons — and a full website redesign might be just what you need to create a more strategic, sales-driven website.

Generally, if you’re already getting inquiries and sales through your website and just looking to boost your numbers across the board, a website refresh can help you get there with a more aligned user experience, copy tweaks, and conversion tactics.

If you’re in dire need of making a change on your website and aren’t sure how to get started, these two questions can help guide you to the best path so you know what to look for and focus on in your website redesign.
