Website Design Packages: Which One Is Right for You?

If you've ever found yourself diving into the world of website design packages, you know the options are  ENDLESS.

One-page sites, custom builds, template solutions, full-service retainers — every designer and agency seems to offer something completely different, and honestly? Figuring out what you actually need can feel overwhelming (and maybe a little intimidating too).

As someone who's been designing websites primarily for small businesses over the last twelve years, I've witnessed firsthand how choosing the right package can be a total game-changer — not just for your online presence, but for your confidence as a business owner (including how you show up online and offline when it comes to your business).

So let's dive into the most common types of website design packages out there, what they typically include, and how to find the perfect fit for where you are in your business journey right now.

The One-Page Wonder

Some businesses — especially service providers or those launching new products — can absolutely thrive with a simple one-page website. I personally LOVE these for businesses with a single offer or simple model.

These designs are laser-focused on one single goal: getting your visitor to take action. Whether that's filling out a contact form, booking a discovery call, or making a purchase, everything on the page is strategically designed to guide them there.

The only downside to this website design approach: it might start to feel limiting if your brand or offer needs room to grow and expand.

Template-Based Sites

Template-based website design packages are definitely a step up from the one-page approach. You're typically looking at 3–10 pages built on pre-designed layouts, and they're often more budget-friendly and faster to launch (which I know is so appealing when you're eager to get your business online like yesterday).

Sometimes this means purchasing the template and hiring a website designer to customize it exactly as you envision, and sometimes this means choosing the designer first who works from templates that you can choose from upon starting your project together.

Templates can typically get your website online in less time, but keep in mind that templates are generally limited in their capabilities and it’s easy to fall into the “my website looks like everyone else’s” downfall.

Custom Website Design

Now, when your brand really needs to stand out — or when your business model includes features like blogs, portfolios, or multiple service pages — custom website design becomes essential. These website design packages often include a full sitemap, strategic layout planning, and an SEO-ready content structure that's built specifically for your goals.

Many designers offer custom packages ranging from $6,000 to $10,000+, and they often include way more than just design — think ongoing marketing or development retainers, too. While that level of support can be incredibly powerful, it might feel like overkill if you're newer to business or working as a solopreneur.

E-Commerce or Membership Sites

If you're selling products or offering digital memberships, you'll need more than just a pretty design — you need the entire tech stack and user experience to support your goals. These website design packages typically start around $8,000 and can reach $50,000+ depending on all the features and functionality you need.

While they're definitely robust and can handle complex business models, they can feel pretty intimidating if you're early in your entrepreneurial journey or if you're not quite ready to manage all the backend complexities yet.
